Video edited by Alice Gosti, filmed by June Zandona and Joseph Lambert. This project uses dance, durational performance, installation, and storytelling to interrogate how immigrants are consistently stereotyped, exoticized, labeled, othered, and shamed. The piece explores alternative narratives for immigrants asked to perform their culture’s stereotypes, investigating the structural racism perpetuated by the use of these labels and the ‘othering’ of immigrants. My solo work examines the history of Italian-American immigration to the US, using Italian culture as the core narrative, then subverting and transcending this experience to spark connections among immigrants of all cultures and proposing new ways for non-immigrants to engage and identify with these stories. Material Deviance in Contemporary American Culture takes a sideways look at our object-based reality. Reflecting stuff-centered culture back to ourselves, this dream state passes through shame, nostalgia, patriotism, and the weight of inheritance. Choreographer and hybrid performance artist Alice Gosti asks, Do objects imbued with so much of our worth start to take over and take on a life of their own? This cluttered landscape expands like a hoarder’s collection and contracts like an immigrant’s suitcase. It breathes like capitalism, filling an existential void whose appetite is endless. Material Deviance helps us uncover what is buried under the steep piles along the path from our bed to the bedroom door. We hold it in our hands. Created by Alice Gosti with Alyza DelPan-Monley, Sruti Arun Desai, Imana Gunawan, Tess Keesling, Lorraine Lau and Kaitlin McCarthy. On the 70th anniversary of Italy’s liberation from fascism, Italian-American choreographer Alice Gosti, in collaboration with Seattle composer Hanna Benn, premieres this five-hour, come-and-go, immersive performance, sparked by a series of interviews with Italian resistance fighters. What needs to happen for us to take action? Alice Gosti choreographed this piece in collaboration with the Oregon Based electronic music duo JVNITOR. B(E)AR(E) was commissioned and produced by Washington Ensemble Theatre (WET) reSET program. In this program choreographers are invited to create an original piece on the set of the production that WET is currently presenting. This piece was created on the set of Mother Fucker with the Hat written by and directed by Valerie Newton-Curtis. B(E)AR(E) is a solid example of Alice’s choreography and the way she creates sustained moments that can tell a story. It also demonstrates the why Gosti is interested and capable of working with sets and objects. The final moment, when we see the bear costume was inspired by the first workshop that was done around the ideas of object based identity, which is a major concept in MDIAC.

edited by Alice Gosti filmed by Michael McCrea Airport Project 2006-2008 choreographer/performer: Alice Gosti This project was about creating a performance piece that in ten days traveled from airport to airport all around the world. It interacted with a characteristic shared by all airports—the power to alter one’s perception of space and time. I am interested in juxtaposing the airport—a place where space and time are warped or even suspended-with dance, an art form completely dependent on how we perceive the body moving in space and time. For more information about the project visit: airport.gostia.net Watch one cut edited by Alice Gosti filmed by Michael McCrea length 5:50 min airport.gostia.net/movies/airportproject.mov This project was possible thanks to: Mark Haim, Jared T.
